Welcome to Tuesday’s Dish. This week we are blogging along with the Schoolhouse Crew Blog Hops 5 Days of Preparing for the Holidays.
So today I’m sharing the recipe that I’m working on for this holiday season. My mother-in-law was known for her fantastic fried apple pies. Having not grown up with them, I was amazed at how good they were and how quickly they disappeared from the holiday buffet.
Sadly she is no longer with us but the legacy of her fried apple pies continues. So this year, I plan to try out some fried apple pie recipes in hopes of bringing a little taste of the legendary addition back to the holiday table. Now I will never be able to duplicate her fantastic, homemade fried pies wrapped in decades of love and sentiment but I’m hoping they will be at least yummy enough to bring some nostalgia with them.
Here’s the first recipe I intend to try this year for Fried Apple Pies. I found it over at My Blessed Life. Wish me luck!
How to make the Apple Filling:
- 5 apples, peeled and sliced thin
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 T. raw sugar
- 1/4 t. sea salt, to taste
- 2 t. cinnamon
Place all ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until apples are tender. Drain and reserve liquid to the side.
Mash apples with a potato masher or fork. Slowly add reserved liquid in a little bit at a time. If the apple mixture gets too runny, mix 2-3 tablespoons of flour in 3/4 c. of reserved liquid or water, mix well, then add it back into the mashed apples.
Set aside and cool.
How to make the Fried Apple Pie Dough:
- 2 c. flour
- 3/4 t. sea salt
- 4 T. baking powder
- 1/3 C. Crisco or 2/3 c. coconut oil
- 1 c. milk
- Extra flour
Mix dry ingredients, then cut in Crisco with a pastry cutter. Add milk and stir. The dough will begin to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
Place the dough onto a {very} well-floured surface, pastry cloth or wax paper. Be generous with the flour!
Knead the dough for 6 minutes then pat down until 1/2″ thick or so. Cut out biscuits until all the dough is used.
To make a Fried Apple Pie:
- Take a cut out biscuit and pat it out.
- Roll it out in a circle — about 1/8 inch thick.
- Add 2 tablespoons of filling to the pie. Don’t be tempted to add more, it will just come out the ends.
- Dampen one side of the dough with a bit of water.
- Fold the pie in half and press edges together.
- Crimp the edges with a floured fork.
- Carefully place a pie in a skillet of hot oil. Use tongs to gently turn when the pie is browned. (Remember, the oil is HOT HOT HOT!)
Viola! Fried apple pies – hope it’s a hit at your holiday too!

We wasted no time turning these gorgeous specimens into perfectly portioned fried apple pies. The filling is near perfection, spiked with vanilla bean and a splash of bourbon. It’s everything apple pie yearns to be.

Fried apple pies, sounds yummy. My Mom used to make them and put them in Dad’s lunch. We used to fight over the left-overs. I’ll have to try this recipe.
