Remember when you were young and got excited for the first day of school? It was exciting…new outfit, new school supplies, a new backpack? It’s easy for homeschooling families to get caught up into all-year schooling and a back-to-the-grind attitude and not make a big deal out of the first day of school. We did the first year or so. But last year we started our year differently – we celebrated!!! And we are definitely celebrating again this year.
We went school shopping for a new outfit and school supplies – a backpack, fun pencils, and some other odds and ends. The kids were excited!
On our white board in our homeschool room we started a countdown to school. We got excited for the year! Then, on the first day or school, they got up to find a fun and special breakfast. After breakfast, we made fun, first-day-of-school signs, took pictures, and started new books and curriculum. We finished the day early and headed to celebrate the first day of school with a fun lunch and play time at the park. It was a great day and the kids had fun!
What we learned last year is that making the first day of school special made them more excited to begin school and more engaged (at least for a while). Start your own traditions for the first day of school and start them this year. It’s never too early to think about what you will do. Make your new year special and see if it gets your family motivated for the new school year.
How do you make the first day of school special?
