We had the pleasure of reviewing Asia, Its People and History by Bonnie Rose Hudson. My daughter has a deep interest in Asia, specifically China. As she is studying Chinese, we find studying countries and culture just as important. This year we have been focusing our studies on countries and cultures so we thought Asia: Its People and History would be an excellent resource for our studies.
Six countries are included in this fun, easy to read, 16-week study of Asia – Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, Iran, and China. But this isn’t just your standard fact book about these mysterious countries, it is a collection of stories about children living in these countries trying to be goo Christian’s. The stories are amazing and real and all set in real time, except for China (it is from a historical setting). The stories are followed by questions to encourage thought and further study as well as points of how to appropriately pray for these countries and the Christian’s trying to spread the Word of God and their love for Jesus throughout their country, even in the face of persecution and cruelty.
I particularly love how the book gave suggestions on how to pray for the country. This is something we are working on with our children – learning how to pray specifically for those in need. This is a great feature of this book in my opinion.
We started with the study of Bangladesh, an area that my daughter recently discovered and had an interest in. Each section begins with a story set in present time (except for China, which is from a historical perspective). After the story there are discussion questions that provided us with some good discussion in our house. Next Ms. Hudson includes some facts about the country itself, about its history, it location in the world, usually including a map showing its location, and then a section explaining what life is like for Christian’s living in that country. Then there is an activity like a crossword puzzle or word find and then another story with discussion questions. After that there is another section of facts and history of the country, more stories and another activity. Throughout the book there are many colorful pictures depicting the country and maps showing where the country is located.
The author includes links throughout the e-book to books about the country as well as other facts that are mentioned throughout the book. Some of the bigger activities are located at the back of the book and the author includes links within the chapter directly to the activities.
