As we move forward with our Blogging Through The Alphabet with some of my blogging friends we come to our “Word of the Week” beginning with the letter F.
My children are elementary age so these words are aimed at developing my elementary school aged kids vocabulary but are generally words that I think are interesting, unique or something kids should know.
This weeks Blogging Through the Alphabet – Word of the Week begins with F. This is a fun word for the whole family. We are having fun using it as often as we can.
F is for flabbergasted
Definition: shocked or surprised someone very much; overwhelmed with shock or wonder
Used in a sentence:
It flabbergasted me that so many people came to my birthday party.
I was flabbergasted by the fact that she didn’t want to go to the dance.
(replace the word “flabbergasted” with the word “surprised” in the sentences above to give the sense a more formal sound)
How we worked with the word:
- Write the word and its definition in our vocabulary notebook.
- Read the definition out loud.
- Write two sentences using the word properly.
- Use the word each day in some manner to try and make the use of the word part of our vocabulary.
The kids like to see who can remember to use the word of the week at breakfast each morning. We are now giving points each day for using it in a sentence properly each day. Whoever gets the most points gets to choose the weekend movie.
Do you use vocabulary words in your school? What do you like to do with developing vocabulary for your children?
