As we move forward with our Blogging Through The Alphabet with some of my blogging friends we come to our “Word of the Week” beginning with the letter H.
My children are elementary age so these words are aimed at developing my elementary school aged kids vocabulary but are generally words that I think are interesting, unique or something kids should know.
This weeks Blogging Through the Alphabet – Word of the Week begins with H. This weeks word came with a little character conversation at our house. Learning what the word means and situations where they may have experience hypocrisy. We had some good conversations for sure.
H is for hypocrisy
Definition: Insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not truthfully have; claiming to have moral standards while not practicing such standards
Used in a sentence:
She showed her hypocrisy by telling her friends to share their candy then hiding her own candy for herself.
I didn’t not want to show any hypocrisy by not setting the example in the classroom.
(replace the word “hypocrisy” with the word “deception” in the sentences above to give the sentence a more formal sound; however, it should be discussed that “deception” isn’t EXACTLY the same but similar – “hypocrisy” has a meaning all its own typically)
How we worked with the word:
- Write the word and its definition in our vocabulary notebook.
- Read the definition out loud.
- Write two sentences using the word properly.
- Use the word each day in some manner to try and make the use of the word part of our vocabulary.
The kids like to see who can remember to use the word of the week at breakfast each morning. We are now giving points each day for using it in a sentence properly each day. Whoever gets the most points gets to choose the weekend movie.
Do you use vocabulary words in your school? What do you like to do with developing vocabulary for your children?
