Do you have a child that loves art? As a person that has a difficult time drawing a circle – no, actually, I CAN draw a circle but that is the end of the show for me, art isn’t an easy subject for me. But my daughter, she LOVES LOVES LOVES art. Therefore, I have struggled with getting her the art that she wants in our homeschool. I have wanted to give ARTistic Pursuits Inc. a try for some time so I was excited that we had the opportunity to give ARTistic Pursuits Inc. and their Middle School Book One a try.
My daughter is 11 and always has a sketch pad, drawing pad, markers, crayons, colored pencils, paints, and glitter readily available. She LOVES arts and crafts, which, I feel, is one of the things that just proves that GOD has a sense of humor because art is DEFINITELY not my forte.
ARTistic Pursuits Inc. is a company that provides great homeschool art programs for every level. The Middle School Book One is geared toward ages 11 and up, approximately 6th-8th grade. The Elements of Art and Composition is the title of this book and contains 68 lessons. Some of the topics covered in the Middle School Book One include space, line, texture, rhythm, proportion, balance, symmetry and depth.
Each lesson explores one element of art. The student chooses a subject from their own environment. What’s unique, in my opinion, is that the art lessons include very detailed instruction on how to work with the elements and the art mediums but also has deep instruction on art history including The Culture, The Artist, and even a Challenge, which gives the student the opportunity to apply what she has learned during the lesson and go a little deeper with the principles.
I was really impressed at how thorough the lessons were and how quickly my daughter picked up on art principles. She was very in tune with the type of pencils she was using, how they could be used and she began working on various art techniques she learned in her lessons. She was able to work through the lessons on her own, at her pace, which was good for me. And she was definitely learning, which is great! We have used several types of art lessons over the past few years and this program brought improvement and art history quickly and easily. I felt good about including these lessons in our homeschool day.
I saw her working on these techniques in her lessons as well as her free time, which was also impressive. She even added 3 types of pencils to my shopping list, which made me chuckle but I thought it was great that she is that focused on doing her art lessons.
Overall, she LOVES her art lessons with ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Middle School Book One and I can see her already learning and gaining technique. I look forward to seeing where the rest of the lessons guide her artistic skills.
