Elementary Science with Science Shepherd – A Review

My kids LOVE science. Love it! If we did science experiments everyday, watched science videos, talked about rocks or animals or the water cycle every day, they would be happy campers. We were excited for the opportunity to review the Introductory Science course from Science Shepherd.

Science Shepherd is a complete, online science curriculum for elementary students. Students ages 6 through 12 can work through the online video lessons at their own pace. The course has 2 levels of corresponding workbooks to go with the video lessons. The Level A workbook is geared to ages 6-8 and the Level B workbook is geared to ages 9 to 12. Each workbook covers the same materials but Level B has additional material for older students.

We were given a 12 month subscription to the Introductory Science course and a Level B workbook for our review. We decided to do the course with both kids, ages 6 and 11. As I knew my 6 year old would likely be uninterested in the workbook, we decided to start with Level B for our daughter to fill out while we did oral answers with my son. This was a good mix of review for the course. Online activities and assignments were completed by both after viewing the videos together. We found this to be a great way to work through the science course together while working at each of their learning levels.

The Introductory Science course includes 35 weeks of video lessons. The videos were VERY short and easy to schedule into our day. Though they can be worked on at the best pace for the student, they are marked with to short a video each day for 5 days a week.

Lesson Breakdown – Daily

Videos are best shown in full screen mode and are great for all ages. Both my kids loved the videos and the short length was great for my younger child with a short attention span. The course begins with 2 weeks of the study of creation as the beginning of science. My kids had a blast with this. Though my older child has done several studies of creation and a project similar to that assigned, she still enjoyed doing it again.

Creation Exercise

The rest of the Introductory Science lessons include studies of meteorology, geology, oceanology, plants, astronomy, underwater creatures, flying creatures, land creatures, human beings, be healthy, ecology and natural resources, matter, energy, motion, and a final lesson in magnets. All topics are approximately 2 to 3 weeks in length. The course gives a great introduction to physical, earth, life and physical science.

Watching a Lesson

The corresponding workbook has great review materials and extra exercises for each lesson. Both kids enjoyed working on the workbook and the review materials. Though we received the Level B workbook geared toward ages 9 to 11, my 6 year was able to work through much of the materials and enjoyed it.

There are science experiments throughout the lessons as well which can be done with every day items. It was fun to go through several of these. My kids always love experiments when studying science.

Overall, we really enjoyed the videos and the fact that the course is creation based. We will certainly continue with the course and possibly consider another course. I hope to see Chemistry added to their list of offered courses in the future.
