My daughter has been studying New Testament 1: The Gospels with the Self-Paced Bible course from Veritas Press. She has just loved her The Gospels study and I love how eager she is to learn with Veritas Press.
Veritas Press has some great Self-Paced courses available. We reviews the Self-Paced History course in the past (you can read that review here) and were excited to review their Self-Paced Bible courses for which we received a one-year membership access to their New Testament 1: The Gospels course.
You can view a sample lesson from the New Testament 1: The Gospels course here.
My daughter really likes the Veritas Press Self-Paced course and, as a parent, I love them. They provide a thorough, fun and interactive lesson that my student can do independently. I know she is learning because I hear her sing the songs and answer the questions.
Each lesson includes interactive lessons that allow the student to demonstrate and practice what they are learning. Here is a sample of where the student is putting the lesson in the right order.
There is also a Gospel song that the student learns to help them learn the Gospels and where they are in the Bible. My kids, as classical learners, do a lot of singing and memorizing. This is very much in support of the way we homeschool and, therefore, this is a great way for her to learn in the same manner as we do the rest of our school. I love hearing her sing the Gospels song. (It has been our experience that the Veritas Press self-paced courses regularly incorporate song into their learning lessons.)
There are also many other activities to interact during the lesson. There are reviews and fill in blanks as well as other games to practice what they have learned.
Throughout all the lesson the character discuss the lesson among themselves as well as “with” the student. The student feels like the character are talking with them as they are telling the story and asking questions to make the student think about the story they have learned about.
The student has a quiz at the end of the lesson that grades what they have learned. They have to get an 80 percent to pass; however, they can move on to the next lesson without achieving a passing grade. The parent will need to monitor their progress. You can do this in the parent dashboard, which allows the parents to make assignments with the lessons to keep your student on track as well as re-assign lessons or just monitor progress. The top of the students assignment pages and the parent dashboard display the cumulative percentage that the student has attained from the assignments completed up to that point. This running grade is automatically totalled for the student and the parent.
Here is what some of the assignments look like that the parent and student can see:
Each Veritas Press Self-Paced lesson has flashcards/timeline cards that are available to assist the student with the lessons. There are flashcards for The Gospels lesson; however, we did not receive these. The first 2 flashcards are available for viewing within the lesson. This allows the student to get started on the assignments while waiting to receive the flashcards if they are using them. They are color cards and a great tool for review and assistance. We found that they were necessary to have in the Self-Paced History course but didn’t seem to be as vital in this Self-Paced Bible course. We may still purchase them as we will complete the course. It is a great course!
Overall, we loved the Veritas Press Self-Paced Bible course and plan to complete it. We will likely try some of their other Self-Paced Bible courses in the future. Some of the TOS Review Crew reviewed their Old Testament courses like Genesis to Joshua and Judges to Kings. Some members of the TOS Review Crew also reviewed a one-year family subscription to VeritasBible.com.
