We received Exploring Creation with Astronomy, 2nd Edition from Apologia. The set included:
The Exploring Creation with Astronomy is a beautiful textbook, true to what I’ve come to expect from Apologia. The course explores Astronomy from a Creation perspective. There are 14 lessons, one on each planet as well as lessons on the Sun, the Moon, Space Rocks, Kuiper Belt and the Dwarf Plants, and Stars, Galaxies, and Space Travel.
Each lesson contains activities, a Wisdom from Above section that gives a scripture verse to go along with the lesson, a Think About It section, which corresponds scripture to the lesson, and a What Do You Remember section that gives great questions to consider at the end of the lesson. The interwoven Bible references is great. Astronomy is a wonderful subject to interlace scripture. Taking the study back to our Creator who made the universe is awesome!
Some of the activities included in the lessons are Making Lava in chapter 4, Making a Telescope in Chapter 6 and Making Clouds in Chapter 11. These are very fun activities to do at home to dive a little deeper into the subject that is being covered in the chapter.
We also received the Astronomy Notebooking Journal and Jr. Notebooking Journal to work through along with our lessons. These notebooks are a great way to bring a little more learning into the lesson. Though we love to read the lessons and look at the pictures, having the corresponding notebooks is a great way to work through the lesson to work on comprehension and retention.
Both the Notebooking Journal and the Jr. Notebooking Journal have very similar in activities. The only real difference is that the Notebooking Journal adds some additional activities here and there and the Jr. Notebooking Journal has colouring pages that correspond with the lesson. The Notebooking Journal includes a “What Do You Remember?” section at the end that asks questions and has lines for writing answers. This is not included in the Jr. Notebooking Journal.
The kids likes all the mini books that they can make to correspond with the lessons. I liked that the pages were still colorful, easy to cut, and then there is a place to glue them into the journal when completed to keep everything in one place.
We also received the Astronomy Audio CD. This audio CD is a audio CD of the textbook being read by the author, Jeannie Fulbright. This is a great way to allow the family to listen to a chapter again or learn on the go. We listened to Chapter 3 in the car on the way to doctor appointments and then were able to come home and get started on the activities. We prefer reading through the chapters ourselves because the pictures and photo are so colourful and great that you really don’t want to miss them. But if you want to hear them again or learn on the go, the Audio CD is an excellent addition to the package.
Overall, we love using Exploring Creation with Astronomy and will continue to use it throughout the year. I am always impressed with the quality of Apologia products. You can also read some of my other reviews of Apologia products. I have reviewed What On Earth Can I Do?, iWitness Series, Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal, and Writers in Residence.
