Do you keep natural remedies around your house? Are they available in your medicine cabinet for a quick fix? Maybe, like me, they are available in your kitchen or on your bathroom counter.
No matter where you keep them, my top 3 natural remedies that I like to keep in the house to use are:
- Coconut Oil
- Epsom Salt
- Honey
So, why do I love these natural products so much and why do I keep them around? Because, quite simply, there is just SO much you can do with them. Here are some of the great natural remedies for these 3 MUST HAVE items.
Coconut Oil
Well, if you have been reading my blog for any amount of time then you know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE coconut oil! (You can read about why babies love coconut oil here and ways to save on toiletries with coconut oil here.) Anyway, I call it a NATURAL REMEDY because it can really remedy all kinds of things. In addition to being a great fat burning agent, studies have found that coconut oil consumption can help with blood cholesterol levels. Just consuming on a regular basis may help you ward off heart disease. Coconut oil is also a natural sun block, blocking approximately 20% of the damaging rays so…if you don’t have any sunscreen lying around, why not coat yourself in coconut oil. You will not only smell good, but moisturize your skin and protect it from the sun. Regular consumption of coconut oil has also been shown to improve the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease due to the fatty acids in the oil increase ketone levels.
Epsom Salts
I remember Epsom Salts from when I was a kid – when it wasn’t COOL to be natural! We used it for a good bath soak for sore muscles or to soak our feet, ankles and wrists if we tweaked them at sports. I keep it around for the same reasons. Additionally, it delivers a good magnesium punch. And since most of us are deficient in magnesium, I add it to the baths of the kids to get a little more into their system. And since absorption is the best way to get your magnesium, I figure its an easy, added bonus. I even used it regularly after I had my babies and my blood pressure remained elevated. It is great to help with lowering blood pressure as well as known for aiding heart and circulatory system health. I also like to add in some essential oils into the bath to help with certain elements. Try this for a relaxing bath: 1/2 cups of salt and 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 10 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil. Sit back and feel your stress disappear!
Honey
Honey sounds yummy on toast and in tea, right? But did you know it has a LOT of great homeopathic uses for honey? In addition to being a healthy, natural sweetener, it is a GREAT cough medicine and that is its primary homeopathic use in our home. It is loaded with vitamins C and B, which is great when you aren’t feel good. And I also love to use it in homemade salves for wounds since it is antibacterial and antimicrobial naturally. And, yes, I have put it directly on a wound in the past when I didn’t have anything pre-made or out of other products that I like to use. But beware, if you use honey on your wounds, if you have a pet, they will be LOVING on your wound!!! Remember, though, for the best honey, you want raw honey. You can find a local beekeeper to find raw honey or it may be available at a local farmers market or health food store. Yes, you can find some online. I really like Desert Creek Honey Raw Texas Honey, Unfiltered; it’s great!
