In this age of technology, it is super important for students to understand fundamental computing topics so I was excited for the opportunity to review the new Digital Savvy course from CompuScholar, Inc.. Understanding a computer and the world of digital data is a vital skill for today’s youth and learning early and practicing good online safety, security, and communication is the key to be successful in today’s digital world.
COMPUTER SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT
Digital Savvy includes 25 lessons plus a few supplemental lessons. Each lesson has the option to do the lesson via video and/or a written lesson. Each lesson also includes a quiz. You could do one lesson per day to complete a chapter in a week. The lessons are short enough to do more than one lesson per day depending upon your student’s interest level and your schedule.
There are a total of 23 chapters of lessons, one midterm project, and one final project. The 23 chapters included in Digital Savvy are:
- Fundamentals of Computer Hardware
- Fundamentals of Computer Software
- Operating Systems
- Computer Files
- Computer Maintenance and troubleshooting
- Computer Networks
- Search Engines
- Computer Security
- Word processing
- Spreadsheet programs
- Presentation programs
- Database technology
- Project management and teamwork
- Digital Images
- Internet Communications
- Social Media
- More Social Media
- Creating Web Pages
- Web Links, Images and Animation
- Programming Concepts
- Digital Logic
- Careers and Professional Skills
The quizzes and tests are self-grading and the students get instant feedback on what they got right and wrong. My daughter loved telling me she got them all right. She did struggle with one lesson and did it over again but I think that having the opportunity to redo a quiz to learn from it is a valuable skill.
The Teacher’s dashboard makes viewing your student’s progress and their grades easy. There are some great tutorials and videos to help the teacher navigate their user to best manage their students and the students’ coursework. As a teacher, you can also view the course and preview the quizzes and tests. It is also very user-friendly to add siblings or other courses.
“I think it’s really fun. I love learning about the computers and how they work. I liked learning about how the files work and can’t wait to learn about creating my own web page!”
