We recently had the opportunity to review a product from one of our favorite vendors – YWAM Publishing . I love it when we have the opportunity to check out new or different products from a vendor we love. We had the opportunity review Heroes of History- Ronald Reagan from the Heroes of History collection as well as the digital download Unit Study Curriculum Guide to go along with it. We were delighted and enjoyed the book very much. We are so glad we had the opportunity to use this product in our homeschool.
What is the YWAM Publishing Heroes of History collection?
The Heroes of History collection is a collection of books about some of the prominent figures in history. There are books available in this Heroes of History collection on such historical figures as Benjamin Franklin, Douglas MacArthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Thomas Edison, to name just a few of their massive collection.
Each of these books are written in story format which makes them easy to read and exciting to hear. Since we reviewed Heroes of History- Ronald Reagan, I was captivated. I have always had an interest in Ronald Reagan and his life is so very interesting, reading the book outloud to the kids was a joy!
Heroes of History- Ronald Reagan is written by Janet & Geoff Benge and is about 200 pages that outline the interesting and full life of one of our greatest President’s. Both my kids loved it as well. They loved learning about The Gipper!
We chose Heroes of History- Ronald Reagan because we try to study about one President each year and these books are a great way to get some great history on the lives of some of great Presidents.
The Curriculum Guide helps you dig deeper.
The Unit Study Curriculum Guide was provided as a digital download to accompany the book. The Unit Study Curriculum Guide allows you turn your Heroes of History book into a unit study if you wish. This means that you can use the book itself as the “text,” if you will, and then use the guide to lead you through additional studies related to what you read in the areas of geography, history, critical thinking, writing, vocabulary, and science. The included resource guide provides maps of the area, hands-on projects such as a timeline, and even a ‘fun fact sheet’ to fill out about Ronald Reagan.
The Unit Study Curriculum Guide itself discusses uses for homeschool as well as use in a group environment. There are chapter questions for younger and older students (don’t worry, the answers are provided in the back of the guides) as well as extras like famous quotes, ideas for student audio/visual projects pertaining to the books, creative writing topics, and even arts and crafts. There is a section that helps you figure out community links to the story and gives some great field trip ideas. The social studies chapter gives pertinent places to locate on a map or even visit if its plausible. Vocabulary words and geographic locations are provided to further your studies as well. As section of books and resources is provided, which is a great way to give your students more ideas on where to read more about your Hero. (I liked that the book resources even gave an age range on the books it recommended so you would know what might be appropriate or not for your student to search out on a library trip.) There is even a list of movies and documentaries about Davy Crockett in this section as well, also with provided age recommendations.
