The K5 Learning online program is great!
A wonderful supplemental program for elementary aged students grades Kindergarten through 5. K5 Learning is an excellent resource to work on math and reading while your kids have fun learning.
Students have the opportunity to work at their level at their own pace so they are not frustrated by moving ahead or having to stalemate their learning while their class catches up to them. No matter where your child is in reading and math, K5 Learning will place them in the program in the right place to allows them to be challenged, learn, and move forward in the program.
The program is designed to be supplemental.
K5 Learning was designed to be used as a supplement to math and reading for students in grades K through 5. They can work at their own pace at home reinforcing and building on what they are learning at school.
Even though it was first though of as a supplemental program to work on skills over the summer months and in after-school programs, homeschoolers, special needs, and gifted students are all turning to K5 Learning to help them supplement a students education.
K5 allows the student to work and his own pace.
The program begins with a FREE ASSESSMENT that will evaluate your student in 5 key reading and 3 key math areas. The parent is immediately sent a report upon completion of the assessment. You can view a sample report here.
The program is then tailored to the needs of your student. Students begin where they need to in the program and advance at their own pace. Some of what is included in the Reading, Spelling, and Math programs are:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics
- Sight Words
- Vocabulary
- Reading Comprehension
- Numbers & Operations
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Data Analysis
- Algebraic Thinking
- Adaptive instruction
- Optimized visual interface
- 150,000 word database
Once you are placed in the appropriate level parents are available to adjust the level if needed. Though my 7 year old placed in 3rd grade math, it was still a little easy for him, so we requested an adjustment for him. Additionally, he was working on 2nd grade Phonics and was able to work through it at his pace.
The Spelling feature is great because you can enter the spelling words that you would like to have your student review. I used the sight words we were working on make a spelling list. One of the great features is that if the student doesn’t pass the spelling test on all the words, the spelling words that were not mastered are moved to the next week’s lesson.
After your student has completed the lesson, the suggested worksheets display which can allow you to save it for later and/or print it immediately for further work through the skills that are being worked upon.
Another great feature is that if you have a particular area that you would like your student to study you can give them an assignment through the “Create Assignment link” in the teacher section.
One of the features that my son did like was, as he logged in to his account, there is a “riddle of the day.” He really enjoyed this and it made it a fun way to begin his lesson.
The lessons are colorful and animated. My son did not get too excited about the lessons but he didn’t mind them. He tended to work for about 10-15 minutes before he was done; which was basically the natural length of the course. A STOP or GO light comes up after each section that allows the student to stop the lesson or keep going. He did not care for the additional printable worksheets and thought that the voice of the characters was not pleasant (I would say its a little “over” happy, but I’m not sure he knew why he didn’t like it – it kinda sounded like the character was talking down to the student.) But I thought that the printables were good and correlated well with the lessons being worked through.
The student can win tickets in the program and then use them to play games. Additionally, the colorful nature of the lessons was good. The print was large and the program was easy to use.
