The kids and I love listening to audio books, they are a big hit in our home, so we were excited for the opportunity to, once again, review an Heirloom Audio Productions
audiobook – In the Reign of Terror.
My kids are huge into history – my son is at a stage now where history is very intriguing – so this is a great fit for us. We had a long car ride planned for July too so we decided this would be fun for the whole family to listen to!
WHAT YOU GET
In addition to the 2 CD set audiobook, In the Reign of Terror, if you join their new Live the Adventure Club, you can get some great additional content, which we received for review.
- Adventure playlist
- E-Book
- Official Soundtrack
- Printable Cast Poster
- Desktop wallpaper
- Official script download
- Study Guide and Discussion Starter
These are some great extras. If you have a child that prefers to read, or you want to pre-read the book before listening to it with your kids, the e-book is a great extra. The cast poster is fun if you have children that have celebrities they like. The voices on Heirloom Audio Productions are always done professionally and sometimes by some pretty famous people. For instance, In The Reign of Terror is read by
- Brian Blessed – lots of credits – my son said “is that a guy from Star Wars?” (yep, episode 1); my daughter said “sounds like Peppa Pig?” yep, right there too 🙂 LOL
- John Rhys-Davies – a lot of credits for kids shows like Lion Guard and Scooby Doo. For us, he was in Raiders of the Lost Arc.
- Cathy Sara – I know her from Downton Abbey
And many more. The voices are GREAT! One of the things I love about Heirloom. They don’t scrimp on talent!

SO WHAT ABOUT THE STUDY GUIDE
We have used the study guide in the past to use these audiobooks as a history class in our homeschool. They are great for this. We didn’t use the study guide this time because we were on a car trip and decided to just be entertained by the audiobook. IT WAS GREAT! The whole family was enjoying the adventure and made the car trip much more enjoyable!
But the study guide is great. We will probably use it again later when we listen again. You can read about how we used it with The Cat of Bubastes, Beric the Briton and Under Drake’s Flag. As you can see, we love these CDs.
The study guide is a great way for parents and students to have a conversation about the historical time period and story as well as dig deeper into the story. I love that the location in the book and on the audio drama CD is very easy to identify in the study guide. For instance, it may say exactly “Disc 1, Track 4” and then display the run time stamp as well. This makes it very easy to stop and start the CDs to utilize the study guide if that’s what you want to do. And it also provides an easy way to review a section if you cannot answer a question. Questions about the plot, characters, and message are presented in the study guide along with “Listening Well” (a reading comprehension question section), questions that help you dig deeper and think through the story as well as vocabulary to define and additional learning points. There is a lot packed into these great study guides.
