The January Bird – Did It Fly out the Window?
I've always thought of New Years resolutions as a bird. Birds fly around, land for a while, take off again, fly around with seemingly little purpose and, sometimes, CRASH -- right into the glass window! I mentioned that I don't really do "resolutions" but I do like to set goals for the new year. I did set some goals with regard to my personal life as well as our school. So, as the month closes, I thought I would look at them and see what we have gotten going and what already lost flight or - ... read more
Is Homeschooling Becoming Trendy? Newsweek’s Article about Homeschooling
Have you read the Newsweek article entitled Why Urban, Educated Parents are Turning to DIY Education? Interesting article. We have discussed in the past that people homeschool for different reasons. Are some doing it to be trendy? I thought it seemed that was the implication of the title. However, after reading the article, I found that it seemed to go back to what we all say - that we have our own reasons for homeschooling. Some of the reasons that are highlighted in the article are true ... read more
Homeschool Buyers Coop
One of my favorite resources to turn to when looking for something curriculum related is Homeschool Buyers Coop. If you have never visited their site, you will be amazed at the deals you can get. The idea behind Homeschool Buyers Coop is that you get a group buy that a school or organization gets as a home school group. I have gotten some great deals through Homeschool Buyers Coop. I have gotten some great ideas as well. They have contests and incentives as well. For instance, I purchased ... read more
Reading Aloud to Your Children No Matter Their Age
Today I read a great article entitled 3 Reasons To Read Aloud to Your Independent Reader at About One.com. It was an excellent article and pointed out some reasons that our family believes in reading aloud. We thoroughly enjoy our read aloud time. Cuddling in our big chair or up in bed, reading and talking about our Sonlight books or library books. I do not see it stopping anytime soon and definitely hope that it doesn't. Right now we are reading Five True Dog Stories by Margaret Davidson. ... read more

National Nuclear Science Week
Today starts National Nuclear Science Week. Since this goes along with the chemistry we are studying right now in Classical Conversations Cycle 3, I decided we would do a little nuclear science in school this week. The Official National Nuclear Science Week website has lesson plans, resources, and additional ... read more
Sonlight Books – Why We Use Them and Love Them!
This year, our first grade year, I had a hard time deciding what curriculum to use. We knew that we wanted to use Classical Conversations but we weren't use it was to be our only curriculum and I didn't want to be unprepared in case it didn't do for us what we wanted. As you know, that is not the case and we have just adored our Classical Conversations experience. However, I did not know this as the school year started so I was prepared with another full curriculum "just in case." I ... read more
