My family and I had the opportunity to visit the Roman Roads Media Visual Latin booth at our homeschool convention in the past and were excited to try out their online Visual Latin 1 product.
We received Visual Latin 1 for review, which is a year worth of Latin Lessons. The teacher is Dwane Thomas, who is fun and entertaining and, incidentally, the person that we spoke with at the convention in the Visual Latin booth. If you read my blog you know my daughter has a little celebrity excitement from time to time so she remembered him from the booth when she saw him in the videos. She thought that was pretty cool that she had already met him in person.
The Visual Latin 1 has 30 video lesson with included pdf file worksheets for each lesson. And the teacher does not need to know Latin to teach the Latin since the video lessons are given by Mr. Thomas and therefore you can learn and facilitate the class with no issues even with no experience.
My daughter enjoyed the lessons and didn’t complain that it was time for Latin. We have been studying Latin as one of our main subjects from the beginning so Latin was not anything new. However, we have been looking for something more fun and engaging in order to learn Latin and we found it with Visual Latin from Roman Roads Media.
The lessons are engaging, fun, and thorough. They are divided into 3 short videos for each lesson to go along with the three pages of worksheets. These are a guide for students and they go over things like grammar concepts, practicing sentences and even reading Latin. And they are very manageable in length – less than 20 minutes for each lesson.
We were very happy with Visual Latin 1 and will continue with the lessons into our new school year. I’m hopeful this will continue to work for us and we will continue with Visual Latin II next year.
Visual Latin 1 is recommended for 4th grade and up. You can purchase Visual Latin 1 as 3 DVDs for $85 (currently on sale – regular retail price is $100). This is an excellent deal for a year of guided Latin lessons.
Overall, we were really happy with Roman Roads Media’s Visual Latin 1 and have no criticism. It was easy to use, fun and engaging, and a great compliment to our classical education. We were happy to find another classical Christian education product for our school year.
