Fill in the Math Gaps with A+ Interactive Math

Recently we had the opportunity to review  the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan by A+ Interactive Math.

We were intrigued by the idea of a placement test to help find out and close up any math gaps we might have. We thought this might be an interesting program to work on this.

A+ Interactive Math offers complete math programs for the whole family, grades K1 through Algebra 1, online, CDs or books.

In addition to math programs, A+ Interactive Math offers the Adaptive Placement Test with Lesson Plan which is to “identify and close” math learning gaps by finding them and creating an individualized lesson plan for working through these identified gaps.

The Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan by A+ Interactive Math is done entirely online and is automatically graded. The parents selects the grade and multiple mini-tests are generated on the concepts that are identified as covered in the selected grades math program. The student then takes the test for the concepts. Each concept is tested and, if the student does not pass, the program generates an individualized lesson plan for the student to cover those concepts. The student can then work his way through the program on that concept. There are also worksheets (offered online with automatic grading or available for printing) to allow the student additional practice on the concept.

Once the student has taken the training and is ready, he can retest the concept to see if he can pass. The program tracks which tests he has taken and his score.

We used the program with our 4th grade math student and my 5 year old son. We tested my daughter on her 4th grade skills. Since the program starts with 1st grade, we tested our 5 year old son on his 1st grade math skills. We started with the tests right away beginning at the top of the list, though I’m sure you could jump around if you wanted.

My daughter was happy with her passing score on many of the tests but was not too excited to learn that she didn’t pass on certain sections and had to complete the individualized learning plan, which was automatically generated immediately.

My son didn’t really care either way, he likes math and was happy to go through the lessons, though I must say I was impressed he passed some of the tests since he was technically in Kindergarten this year and we were testing 1st grade end of the year math skills. He liked getting the big “thumbs up” on the test and was quite fine with moving through the tests.

Since the tests are timed, I helped him enter his answers in a timely manner. After the first test where he hunted on the keyboard for the answers and didn’t pass because of time, I thought that was probably a better way to do it since the test isn’t about keyboard recognition skills. After that he didn’t mind the tests and made his way through them.

My daughter on the other hand was not fond of the tests much after not getting that big thumbs up on all of them out of the box. The long list of lessons that a failed test generated was a little daunting. I expected to get one lesson from a test missed but this was not the case. She was very frustrated. However, once I helped her go through the lessons she saw that many of the lessons were on part of the test she DID already know and we could move on.

The individualized lesson plans are lessons that are colorful and interactive. The lessons are presented using audio, video and text to reinforce learning for all learning styles.

The lessons are lengthy though. This is something I would like to see changed. Especially in a remedial, fill in the gaps, program, I would like to see smaller lessons or large lessons broken down into session or something. Spending over 20 minutes on a test and then over 30 minutes on a lesson plan is a LONG time for math. She was not happy with that.

The next test that she didn’t pass I helped her select something from the list to begin with and then set the timer for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes she could stop the lesson and return the next day. This drags out the lessons a little but makes it more palatable for her.

I did like that the lesson would be marked “In Progress” and it would save where you left the lesson. It also allows the parent to mark it manually completed if you complete it outside the program or with the printable worksheets.

The Dashboard view provides a lot of information on the students progress. This is also available through the parent account, which allows you manage all your students, change their math level if you wish, see their progress, etc.

The Dashboard provides current progress on lessons, graphic cues on where a student is in the progress on a topic, and a summary of all the grade level topics stating whether they have taken the test, if they are on grade level and how many attempts at taking the test they have used.

Overall I loved the concept of the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan by A+ Interactive Math. Finding out where learning gaps in math are and working on them is a great idea and something that I thought would be a great idea for us as we end the school year and maybe even over the summer.

The setup was fine and the website was easy to use. If you have a child that is already using the  A+ Interactive Math program, this would be an excellent addition. Since have not been using A+ Interactive Math for math, the adjustment in how the concepts are taught and the length of the lessons were a curveball for us.

I like the setup and the concept. I think the it would be nice if the lessons were shorter and more individualized to the exact missed concepts and not the broad topic that included the concepts that were missed on the test. However, in the end, the tests were effective and the program is good. I would just like to see shorter lessons, especially when using as a catchup or summer math program.
