If you are looking for a history curriculum for the whole family with a Biblical worldview then let me introduce you to the Pathway to Liberty’s The Middle Ages, part of the Pathway to Liberty’s History Curriculum, from Pathway to Liberty Homeschool Curriculum.
Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among the people.

What is Pathway to Liberty
Do you want a curriculum that includes Biblical Worldview and can be used for all your multilevel students? One where you don’t have change gears from student to student in order to teach history? This is what Pathway to Liberty is all about.
Created by Jayme MacCullough, Pathway to Liberty is a complete curriculum for students of all age groups. MacCullough wrote The Chain of Liberty, Do Men have a Right to Think for Themselves? This is used in several levels of the Pathway to Liberty curriculum
Pathway to Liberty is a complete history curriculum with a Biblical worldview that includes Christian History woven with world events and includes the American principles that the U.S. was founded upon from the beginning.
Pathway to Liberty is available as a physical product or digital download. The physical product is meant to be used by one student and the student workbooks are consumable. However, digital downloads can be printed off for as many students as you need.
Pathway to Liberty offers products for four time periods with four different levels. The time periods are:
- Pathway to Liberty’s Universal History
- Pathway to Liberty’s Middle Ages
- Pathway to Liberty’s US History
- Pathway to Liberty’s World History
Each time period offers 4 levels:
- Level 1 is for K5 – 3rd grade
- Level 2 is for 4th – 6th grade
- Level 3 is for 7th – 9th grade
- Level 4 is for 10th – 12th grade.
This is a quick video on what Pathway to Liberty is and why it was developed.
How It Works
I don’t know about you but it seems like with most of the curriculums we have used in the past, the history curriculums are very different each year so, if you have students in varied grades as we do, each student is studying a different time period. In our home, we have done a good job at all studying the same historical time period but we have had to develop it on our own at home and have not had any workbooks or plans to follow. We have typically just followed one curriculum and then did a deeper study for the other kids as they get older.
Pathway to Liberty has it all planned out for you so you can study the same time period in history with all your kiddos but then have the appropriate level of study for each of the kids. Your mind only has to be in one time period for the school year – WHAT? Doesn’t that sound amazing?
In addition to the plan for the history studies, Pathway includes a suggested reading list that is great and broken down by level.
Here is a great video on how the curriculum works:
Each level of the program provides a Student Guide and a Teacher’s Guide.
The Student Guide provides an introduction to the curriculum, the instruction on how to use the curriculum, course outline, lesson plans, assignments, daily questions, writing ideas, and vocabulary words.
The Teacher Guides include a curriculum introduction, instruction on how to the use the curriculum, lessons plans, teaching objectives, and weekly overviews as well as answers to questions that are included in the Student Guide. The lessons plans integrate Bible, History, Literature, Geography, and Writing. The Teachers Guide also includes additional writing sources, word study, vocabulary, devotional and research models. Each week includes multi-level lessons plans, the Weekly Scripture, History (including lesson plans, maps, vocabulary, and writing assignments), word studies, and an Expanded Reading Chart.
WHAT WE RECEIVED AND HOW WE USED IT
We received Level 2 – The Middle Ages. This is the second year of study included in the Pathway to Liberty curriculum. The Middle Ages curriculum covers the Christian church’s impact through the Roman Republic, Heroic Age, and Age of Exploration. Study of faithful followers of God turned martyrs are also covered. We received The Middle Ages Teaching Guide and Student Guide for Level 2. We also received The Chain of Liberty and accompanying Study Guide, as this is included as a required text for Year 2 – The Middle Ages.
In addition to The Chain of Liberty book, Pathway to Liberty has several other required reading books in order to complete the curriculum. We already owned most of them and what we did not already own, we were able to pick up at the library.
As mentioned, Biblical Worldview is included in Pathway to Liberty. Therefore, this is not for secular homeschoolers. This is definitely a Christian based history curriculum. There is a Scripture, Principle, and Leading Idea for each week and included in the Teacher’s Guide and Student Guide Weekly Overview. Additionally, the guides give all 4 levels of assignments, required readings, writing options, expanded history options, and a vocabulary list.
Each week the student writes out the scripture, principle, and leading ideas and then answers questions in the student guide. Additional scripture reading that relates the study are included throughout. The Student Guide does include questions about how the lessons studied relate to the scripture, principle, and leading idea adding in some critical thinking.
The lessons typically take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending upon how much reading required and how deep the discussions get regarding the questions and critical thinking.
The Chain of Liberty
The Chain of Liberty books is a central resource to the curriculum. Written by Jayme MacCullough as well, it explores the path of liberty from Adam and Eve to modern times. It explores liberty and what liberty means as well as how it changed throughout history (links in time) — i.e. Creation, Moses, Reformation, Constitutional Republic, Restoration. The book also discusses how God has always been key in the path to liberty. The Chain of Liberty book also has a Study Guide with thought-provoking questions to help work through and gauge comprehension of the materials.
Overall, Pathway to Liberty is a very good integrated curriculum for the whole family. Being able to educate the whole family from Kindergarten to 12th grade, working through the same time periods, makes the curriculum a great option for many families. PLUS, if you are active military, you can get a 20% off discount!!! You know that we love that and Pathway to Liberty’s support of military families!!! Yay!!!
