This week Adventures in Homeschooling is going to participate in the Schoolhouse Crew 5 Days of Preparing for the Holidays blog hop. Today we are talking about Decorating.
Now, I’m not a huge decorator. It is definitely something that is out of my comfort zone, much to my daughters chagrin I’m afraid. I have promised to make a better attempt at decorating this year for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Therefore, this Thanksgiving season we have decided to start some new traditions. With the beginning of our Thanksgiving tree in the works, we are excited to begin fall decorating with our prominent Thanksgiving tree. This has been an exciting addition for us and one that I hope we will continue.
You can find directions on how to make your own Thanksgiving tree here and here. We put a basket on the table with our hands. 30 for my daughter and 30 for my son and a few extras for mom and dad (to be a very leafy tree I think). I traced their hands on construction paper and we just pull them out daily and write on them. I write out my sons since he is 3. My daughter says next year the family dog need representation. Maybe we will add some paw prints and “I am thankful for Frisbees and belly rubs” to the tree!
We are also doing some Thanksgiving decorating with some fun laminated leaves. We are taking some of our leaves from our nature walks, laminating them, and putting them on fishing line and tying to the trees outside. We think this will be a fun way to keep the outdoors decorated. I hope to find a few more Thanksgiving crafts to get the house decorated for the Thanksgiving holiday. We also thought we would use this idea from In Lieu of Preschool. They did bats for Halloween but I’m going to make a leaf template and do the same thing.
As far as Christmas, I’m hoping to have some more ideas ready to go by the end of the month so we can start decorating for Christmas. Again, early decorating is not me but I’m trying to be better to help out the kids.
Here’s a few more crafts we are considering for the month:
What do you do to decorate that is easy, quick, and still fun? I would love some great ideas. And happy holidays!

I am with you on early decorating (or decorating at all, for that matter)! My mom always decorates for EVERY holiday, and I can barely put cinnamon brooms up for Thanksgiving. At Christmas time, I do put out a few special things, but that is the only season I am an early decorator for. Thanks for sharing! I was the same way. My mom decorated religiously and thoroughly for every season. I guess I had a 50/50 chance of going either way. I really am trying to do better FOR THE KIDS! My daughter is crafty so it kills her when we see all our friends with decorations and crafts everywhere. This year I’m making the effort for her. We’ll see how long it lasts. Thanks for stopping by, I’ll have to check out Christmas decorations ideas. Thanks.

I love the tree idea. I have been wanting to do it for a couple of years, but procrastination always gets the best of me. It sounds like you will have a very full tree.

I have wanted to do it in the past too. I just too brown paper bags and we got started. Much easier to get started than I thought it would. Now that’s its up, its easier to remember what to do. There’s still to do it. You can always do some extra on days you have extra ideas or just pick up now. The kids are loving it! Thanks for stopping by.

I put some dried corn (or plain popcorn) into a clear glass and added a tea light. It looked really beautiful. We also did a Thankfulness Tree this year.

I hadn’t thought of corn to hold the tea light. Nice idea. Very harvest/fall. Thanks for sharing. Great idea!

This makes a great decoration for your Thanksgiving Door: Get Grandpa involved in this. Ask him for all his old ties that he wore when he was in college. They make super tail feathers and all the kids need to make are the head, body, wings, and feet for your turkey. Mount it on a wrinkled brown paper bag. You don’t have to buy anything, just reuse. Oh, I just thought of something else–use the seeds from pine cones and glue them on the breast.
Happy holidays,
Barb Klein

Our family has been making Thanksgiving Trees for several years now and they really make our holidays even more special. As we see our homemade tree hanging up on the wall each day throughout the holiday season (we keep ours displayed all the way through Christmas), it reminds us of how much we are blessed, even with just one quick glance.
