My daughter loves science! It is her favorite subject, much to my chagrin since it was never my best subject. Like most homeschooling moms, I wanted to make sure that we science the way that we should be was never sure how to fit in those experiments and give enough variety to my kids.
There are so many programs out there, its difficult to decide where to start. About two years ago, I started receiving the emails and newsletters from SuperCharged Science and we even attended a few free webinars that was offered by SuperCharged Science. However, we had not made the leap to the program, we were still plugging along with our current science program.
Then I was given the opportunity to review SuperCharged Science and their e-science program.Boy was I excited! Finally, I can really look at the program and see if it would work for us — and it DEFINITELY did. It’s everything and MORE than I thought it would be!!!
The Program
What is SuperCharged Science and their e-science program? It is the science program you have been looking for. Do you need a complete science program for your whole family with a large age range? This is your program. Do you want a supplement to your current program to help you find additional information, in depth videos, and experiments that coincide with your science topic? SuperCharged Science is for you.
Whether you have a Kindergarten student or a high schooler, SuperCharged Science has something for you for your science. And its very user-friendly. If you child can read, they can probably do the program with little to no adult assistance (though science experiments ARE science experiments so you may want to monitor them- plus they are FUN!! You probably won’t want to miss out!)
The Author
Aurora Lipper is the author of the program and is the person who wrote the content, chose the experiments, and is in all the videos. And, get this….she’s an ACTUAL ROCKET SCIENTIST. How about a rocket scientist teaching your kids science? I think that’s pretty cool. She is down to earth, easy to understand, and, interestingly enough, reachable online if you have questions. She interacts with the comments on the website, answers questions posed, and is even available during specific times to answer questions during live chats.
My daughter loves Aurora and enjoys all her videos and finds her explanations interesting. I really enjoy listening to her make science sound easy as well. (Where was someone like her for me 20 years ago – I might have liked science a little more!)
What’s included?
You will be AMAZED at what is included in this program. The studies are broken down nicely by topic. Each topic has lessons plans available, textbooks that are printable or online reading available, videos and resources for each unit, and experiments.
What’s really cool is that the units include a list of supplies needed for the experiments so you can know what you need ahead of time. I really liked that I could look up ahead and see if its something we could get started with and get what we need for the unit we are studying ahead of time. The list is even available in printable form so you can print and take it with you.
How we used it
After signing up and reading through the “Getting Started” section, which was very informative and not too dry or drawn out, we jumped right in for an experiment because, of course, that’s what gets the kids hooked and Aurora even tells you that.
There is an entire section of the website that gives you some quick start experiments that are easy to do, easy for the kids, and typically involve household items so that you likely have them around. We immediately did the FLYING CONTRAPTIONS experiment where we made quite the interesting “paper airplane” (for lack of a better layman’s terms). My daughter loved it and we discussed why it was mathematically likely NOT to fly but did. (The only thing I noticed was that there were several comments on this experiment from parents asking for a video or paragraph EXPLAINING why it was mathematically IMPOSSIBLE for it to fly but still did. It was mostly left up to me, the parents, to explain so I can see this might be a problem for some if their didn’t understand why it did, in fact, fly. However, we really enjoyed it.
Next, we went over what a Scientific Journal is and watched the video of how important a Scientific Journal is to a scientist. The videos and materials are really great in letting you go as simple or as deep into the Scientific Journal and how to start your own. We did just that.
We then started our second experiment – PLASMA GRAPES! Also from the quick start section so we could jump right into another experiment. (You don’t have to do these, there are many to choose from, we just thought these looked interesting.) The kids (yes, even the 3 year old) loved it!! We did it MANY times. We even redid the experiment when daddy got home because the kids couldn’t wait to tell him all about it and show him the outcome. (Now what mom doesn’t love to see the kids excited to share their day and do more school just to show dad how cool it is!)
After that we decided to start into a Unit Study with Living Organisms 1, since that is what we were studying this year in Science and, plus, its Spring now and a great time to study living things. Even reading the text, my daughter really loved all the embedded videos and explanations. They are top quality and very interesting! We just worked on it as long as we thought was good for the day and then moved over to the experiments section and did an experiment that goes with the chapter. There are Lessons Plans available for each unit if you need it to be more structured. I read through them and then we went with what worked for us. We did a little each day. There are plenty of videos and experiments and resources to keep you busy for as many days you want to
Additionally there are MANY units (right now there are 19 units and Aurora is still developing more.)
Summer Camp
SuperCharged Science also offers a summer e-camp for students (it opens for registration in June) where the kids can stay busy with science, taught by Aurura, all summer. I look forward to looking into this this summer. What a great way to have fun and stay engaged without having to leave home this summer.
Overall, I LOVE SuperCharged Science. I plan to use this as our science program next year and look forward to finishing out the year with it as well. I think the information is very customizable to any need you may have the amount of information and resources available on the website is extensive, with new information always being added.
The price is very reasonable. For the K-8 program you can have a monthly subscription FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY for $37 per month and for K-high school you can have a monthly subscription FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY for only $57 per month. You can cancel anytime. It’s amazing what you get for the price and the kids will love it!
Be sure to check out the website and see the great information available at SuperCharged Science. You won’t be disappointed!!
